April 18, 2009: Entries are sought for the annual William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize, which offers $20,000 for a single photographic work by an Australian photographer.
Established in 2006 the William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize is one of Australia’s most anticipated awards for photography. Established by the MGA (Monash Gallery of Art) Foundation with the aim of expanding and enriching the MGA permanent collection, the competition is open to all Australian photographers. Last year’s competition attracted more than 350 entries.
Entrants must submit up to five images on a CD. Selection of finalists is judged in digital form only. A non-refundable entry fee of $50 is payable with each submission. The judging panel comprises:
Helen Ennis is Australia’s most important and widely known curator and historian of photography. Helen is currently Senior Lecturer in Art Theory and Associate Head, Undergraduate, at the Australian National University School of Art, and a freelance curator.
Anne Ferran is one of Australia’s leading contemporary photographers, whose work is part of the MGA collection. Anne has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally since the 1980s, and is highly regarded as an artist, academic and writer. Shaune Lakin, Director of MGA. Shaune is one of Australia’s leading photographic curators and scholars. Shaune has significant experience with two of the country’s most important cultural institutions: formerly as Senior Curator of Photographs at the Australian War Memorial and Curator of International Painting and Sculpture at the National Gallery of Australia.
