Sixteen finalists have been announced for the 2008 Nikon-Walkley Photographic Awards for press photography.

 

October 21, 2008: Sixteen finalists have been announced for the 2008 Nikon-Walkley Photographic Awards for press photography.
The annual Walkley Awards celebrate Excellence in Journalism and include special categories for press photography. The 16 finalists will compete for Walkley Awards in news photography, daily life, sport, photographic essay and the pinnacle of photographic achievement – the Nikon-Walkley Press Photographer of the Year. The Nikon-Walkley Awards are judged by a panel of senior photographers and picture editors representative of the whole industry.
This year’s finalists were chosen from 341 entries. A full list can be found at www.walkleys.com. The nominated works will be on show at Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney from October 31 – November 15, 2008 after which they will move to Brisbane’s Powerhouse Museum in February, 2009 and Wallsend District Library in Newcastle from mid-March, 2009.

 

Also announced last night were the winners of the Nikon-Walkley Prizes for portrait and community/regional photography. Winner of the portrait prize was Steven Siewert for “Waiting for Wanda Jackson”, which was published in Good Weekend. Andy Drewitt took out the community/regional photography award for “Breakdown”, which was published in the Maroondah Leader.
