September 2, 2009: It’s time to dust off the macro lens; entries are being sought for the Australian Museum’s Up Close & Spineless photography competition.
Now in its eighth year, this popular contest aims to shed a little more light on the lives of invertebrates (animals without a backbone) while also encouraging people to explore the wonderful world of nature. The 2008 competition received more than 500 entries and winning images included shots of a huntsman spider prowling across a lawn and an assassin fly devouring his lunch. 2009 winners and selected entrants will have the chance to see their work on display in the Up Close & Spineless photography exhibition in October. Winners will receive a $600 voucher to spend on photographic supplies.
As in previous years, the competition is split into four categories: professional, open, amateur and schools. For the first time this year entries can be submitted online at www.australianmuseum.net.au/UpClose/. Entrants can obtain help in identifying the subjects of their shots by calling the Australian Museum’s Search & Discover section on (02) 9320 6202 or sending an email to sand@austmus.gov.au.
Full terms and conditions of the competition can be found at www.australianmuseum.net.au. Entries close on Friday, 25 September 2009.
