September 11, 2008: Coincident with the unveiling of the DSLR-A900 camera, Sony has also released details of two new lenses: the SAL1635ZA and SAL70400G.
The SAL1635ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA is a Carl Zeiss design that provides a super-wide zoom on the A900. Constructed from 17 elements in 13 groups, it features an ED (extra-low dispersion) element to improve optical clarity and centre-to-edge resolution plus a super ED glass element for much stronger correction of chromatic aberration and accurate colour rendition. Three aspherical lens elements provide greater brightness across the image field, while Carl Zeiss T* (T star) coating technology enhances light transmission and minimises flare and ghosting.

The SAL70400G is the latest addition to Sony’s G-series line of premium lenses. Offering a focal length range of 70-400mm it provides a 5.7x zoom ratio. Maximum apertures range from f/4 to f/5.6. Consisting of 18 elements in 12 groups, it includes two ED glass lenses and boasts a circular aperture with nine diaphragm blades for pleasing de-focused effects. At the minimum focus distance of 1.5m, maximum magnification is 0.27x. Internal focusing allows use with angle-critical filters and attachments, while a focus mode switch and three focus hold buttons have been added to the lens barrel for enhanced operability.
