: Two new models will be added to Nikon’s 8-megapixel Coolpix camera line-up: the Coolpix 8800, which has a 10x zoom lens and the wide-angle Coolpix 8400, with a 24-35mm (equivalent) lens. The Coolpix 8800 is the first 8-megapixel camera with a 10x zoom lens and the first Nikon consumer camera with a Vibration Reduction (VR) system. The 8.9-89mm f/2.8-5.2 Zoom Nikkor lens contains two glass-moulded ED elements and delivers ‘razor sharp’ images. Two VR shooting modes are provided: Normal and Active, which is used when the photographer is moving. With its 6.1-21.6mm f/2.6-4.9 (24-35mm equivalent) zoom lens, the Coolpix 8400 boasts the widest angle of view currently available in a compact digicam and supports close focusing to 3 cm from subjects in macro mode. The Coolpix 8400 is the first compact digicam with i-TTL Speedlight flash control and, like the Coolpix 8800, it offers six still shooting modes: auto, P, A, S, M and a Scene mode with 15 pre-determined settings. Video clips can be captured at VGA resolution at 30 frames/second and Time-lapse movie, Sepia movie, B&W movie and Small movie settings are also available. A voice memo function allows up to 20 seconds of audio to be attached to still shots.
Both cameras support NEF-RAW and JPEG capture, along with a new JPEG EXTRA format that compresses data by 50% to produce an almost lossless image file. Both cameras come with vari-angle TFT LCD monitors and high-resolution TTL electronic viewfinders and both have ‘DSLR-styling’. Macro capture to 3 cm is available with both cameras and both include Nikon’s BSS function, along with a histogram display for both shooting and playback. White balance bracketing is also provided and a new EN-EL7 lithium-ion battery offers increased power and more shots per charge. Both cameras are PictBridge compatible.
