September 1, 2009: Coinciding with the announcement of the new EOS 7D, Canon has released details of three new lenses, including two new standard zoom lenses and the world’s first macro lens with a shift-direction image stabiliser.
The EF100mm f/2.L MACRO IS USM is the first lens to include Canon’s shift direction image stabilisation system, which is designed to improve stability for macro photography. Consisting of 15 elements in 12 groups, it has a minimum aperture of f/32 plus a close focusing limit of 30 cm. Only lead-free glass has been used in the optical system, which is coated to minimise flare and ghosting. A nine-bladed iris diaphragm closes to a circular aperture for attractive bokeh and internal focusing enables angle-critical attachments to be used without re-adjustment. A ring USM and optimised AF algorithms provide fast and quiet auto focusing. The new lens is 123 mm long and weighs 625 grams.

The EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM offers versatility for photographers using cameras with ‘APS-C’ sized sensors, providing a 5.7x zoom ratio in a compact body. Constructed from 17 elements in 12 groups, it provides minimum apertures of f/22 to f/36 and is 87.5 mm long and weighs 575 grams. High precision aspheric lenses and UD lens elements correct aberrations and a circular aperture provides attractive bokeh.

Designed for cameras with ‘APS-C’ sized sensors, the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a high-powered standard zoom lens that automatically distinguishes between normal shooting and panning shots and selects the optimum Image Stabiliser mode. Up to 4EV of shutter speed advantage is claimed for this system. Optical construction consists of 16 elements in 12 groups. This lens measures 101 mm in length and weighs 455 grams. Closest focusing distance is 45 cm.
