December 10, 2010: Tamron has announced an update to its popular 18-270mm ‘all-in-one’ zoom lens adding a new ultrasonic motor focus drive based on piezo-electric technology.

Designed for DSLR cameras with APS-C size sensors, the new 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens claims to be the most compact, lightweight lens with a 15x zoom ratio available for SLR cameras and will be offered initially with Canon and Nikon mounts. The replacement of the older AF drive motor with the Piezo AF drive (PZD) should provide faster and quieter focusing when the autofocus is engaged.
Tamron’s VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilisation system is also included and the new lens features the company’s latest, lighter, more compact new VC unit. This allows the lens to be easy to use and highly portable. Weighing only 450 grams, it is 88 mm long, extending to 96.4 mm at full tele position. The barrel diameter is 74.4 mm and the lens accepts 62 mm filters. Minimum aperture ranges from f/22 to f/40, depending on focal length. A petal-shaped lens hood is supplied.
The new lens is scheduled for release in Japan on 20 December, with other parts of the world to follow. For more information, contact local distributor, Maxwell Optical Industries by phoning 1300 882 517 or visit www.maxwell.com.au.
