June 2003: Tamron has unveiled the first two in a new range of “Di” lenses that are designed specifically for use with digital SLR cameras.
The term “Di” stands for Digitally Integrated Design which means they have been designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Tamron claims its new lenses, which feature the same “XR” technology as employed by Tamron in the development of high-power zoom lenses such as its 28-200mm and 28-300mm zooms, are also the “most compact and lightest in the history of fast zoom lenses”. Their optical design and anti-reflection coating have been developed to compensate for the internal reflections and ghosting effects common with image sensors.
The first two lenses are the SP AF28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di zoom and the SP AF180mm f/3.5 Di 1:1 Macro, a compact telephoto/macro lens. Others are expected to follow. Tamron lenses are distributed in Australia by Maxwell Optical Industries, www.maxwell.com.au.
