December 9, 2011: Tamron has announced the imminent release of its 18-200mm lens, the first high-power zoom from the company for Sony’s NEX-series cameras. Weighing only 460 grams, the new lens covers an angle of view equivalent to 27-300mm in 35mm format. It comes with built-in VC (Vibration Compensation) for easy handheld shooting. The VC mechanism employs a lightweight three-coil system, electromagnetically moving the VC group via three steel balls. It operates more quietly than Tamron’s earlier VC unit.
The AF drive in the new lens has a stepping motor that is optimal for the Contrast-detection AF system employed by NEX series cameras. Direct Manual Focus (DMF) function supports fine manual adjustments after initially focusing by AF. The minimum focusing distance of 0.5 metres at the 200mm position makes this lens useful for shootign close-ups.
