The State Library of NSW has released details of up-coming exhibitions for 2013, which will include two exciting international photography exhibitions.
All exhibitions will be open to the public free of charge. The current exhibition,The Greatest Wonder of the World, runs until 12 May and presents 100 photographs from the famous Holtermann collection. The large format prints cover the period from 1870 to 1875 and include portraits of townspeople in NSW and Victoria, with an emphasis on towns involved in the gold rush. Images of Sydney and Melbourne are also on display.
Benjamin Lowy: Afghanistan,is an exhibition presented by Head On Photo Festival. On display from 29 April to 14 June, it features images from Afghanistan, captured by award-winning American photojournalist Benjamin Lowy on an iPhone.
Black on White: Photographs by Belinda Mason, is also presented in partnership with Head On Photo Festival. Running from 6 May to 25 August, this photo project by award-winning photographer, Belinda Mason, presents insights into the views Indigenous communities have of white Australians and their culture.
Magnum: On Set, A Magnum Photos Touring Exhibition, is the first of the international exhibitions. It is presented in partnership with Head On Photo Festival and will be on display from 18 May to 23 June. The display presents 116 intimate images of Hollywood stars, such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor, taken on film sets and behind the scenes by photographers from the legendary Magnum Photos agency. This is the only Australian venue for the exhibition.
Winners of the Head On Portrait Prize will be exhibited between 18 May and 23 June. The display will showcase works by 40 finalists. The World Press Photo 2013 and Sydney Morning Herald Photos 1440 will share the exhibition space between 29 June and 28 July. These displays are presented in association with the Canon EOS Festival of Photography.
The second international exhibition is Selling Dreams: One Hundred Years of Fashion Photography, which will run from10 August to 10 November. Featuring world famous photographers such as Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon, the touring exhibition presents 60 iconic images from the UK’s National Collection of the Art of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum that exemplify the glamour and fascinating evolution of fashion photography. This is the only Australian venue for the exhibition.
Winners of the Nikon-Walkley Press Photo Awards will be showcased between 14 October and 3 November. This display presents more than 100 works by Australia’s best photojournalists covering the big news moments of the year. This display is presented in association with the Walkley Foundation.
