July 14, 2010: Sony Australia has released details of the world’s first consumer HD camcorder with an interchangeable lens system, the Handycam NEX-VG10.
The body of the Handycam NEX-VG10 is designed to provide a stable grip for videography, especially when capturing subjects at high or low angles. It’s equipped with a 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD swivelling screen that features TruBlack technology. A pivoting EVF allows subjects to be framed in desired perspectives for shooting.

The Exmor APS HD CMOS image sensor measures 23.4 x 15.6 mm and is much larger than normal camcorder sensors. This enables users to shoot with shallower depth-of-field than was previously possible and isolate subjects from ‘busy’ backgrounds. Users can record Full HD movies at 1920 x 1080 pixels using the AVCHD format at the maximum bit rate of 24Mbps. The NEX-VG10 can also record 14.2-megapixel photographs.
With the bundled E-mount 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS zoom lens, the VG10 has an 11x optical zoom range. Optical image stabilisation is provided, with an Active Mode that enables smooth, stable footage on the move. Additional features include silent auto focus and iris control, eliminating the lens noise that can often appear on DSLR and compact camera videos. Consumers can also use various A-mount lenses via an optional lens adaptor, expanding imaging possibilities for stills or for video.

The Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four separate omnidirectional microphone capsules for high-quality stereo sound recording. There is also a jack for adding an optional external stereo microphone, plus a 3.5mm input and 3.5mm headphone jack for audio monitoring.
Unlike digital still cameras and DSLRs, the NEX-VG10 supports extended recording without time limit. It has slots for Memory Stick and SD cards and comes with the NP-FV70 battery which supports approximately 155 minutes of continuous recording. An optional NP-FV100 battery can record more than five hours of continuous video. Purchasers will be entitled to free download of Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 for post-production editing of their videos. It includes video compositing, colour correction and soundtrack creation.

The Handycam NEX-VG10 will be available in Australia from mid September 2010. Further information on some of the unique features of the NEX-VG10 can be viewed on the Sony Australia YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxJiJH1YsrQ.
