August 13, 2008: Sony’s HDR-CX12, which goes on sale this month, is the company’s first HD camcorder to include both Smile Shutter and Face Detection technology.
Delivering 1920×1080 Full High Definition recording and 10.2 megapixel still image quality, the Handycam CX12 camcorder (RRP $1,699) integrates Sony’s ClearVid CMOS Image sensor with Exmor-derived technology and the BIONZ image processing engine to ensure vivid movies and photos with high sensitivity and low noise. Both video and images are recorded to Memory Stick Pro media and the CX12 will be supplied with bonus 4GB and 8GB cards.
The Smile Shutter and Face Detection technology enables the CX12 to detect smiles during video recording and automatically take a still image of the scene. Smile sensitivity and smile priority settings allow users to customise the level of smile detection and subject focus to differentiate between small children and adults. Face Detection Technology can identify up up to eight faces in the camcorder’s LCD frame and will automatically allocate more pixels to a detected face during the AVCHD encoding process, optimising focus, exposure and colour for natural looking skin tones. Optical image stabilisation is also provided.
A new Dual Recording function enables the CX12 to take 7.6 megapixel high resolution still images while recording HD video. Smooth Slow Recording allows users to record up to 240 fields per second and capture a three second video as a smooth 12-second slow-motion video. A built-in zoom microphone is also provided for recording audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Users can add an optional wireless microphone to record distant sound.
Like its predecessors, the CX12 is designed for easy integration with Sony’s Bravia TV sets and videos and photos can be directly viewed in HD on any compatible TV by simply connecting both devices with an HDMI cable and using the Bravia remote control. Easy PC Back-up provides convenient backup of Memory Stick data to a notebook or PC and One Touch Burn allows videos and photos to be easily replicated on AVCHD discs and DVDs with the press of a button on the supplied Handycam Station.
