July 28, 2010: Sony will expand its range of A-mount DSLR lenses with the addition of three new prime lenses at popular focal lengths.
The new Distagon T* 24mm f/2 SSM (SAL24F20Z) has been jointly developed with Carl Zeiss and features the acclaimed retro-focus lens configuration. It functions as a fast wide-angle 24mm lens on full-frame cameras with 36 x 24 mm sensors, or as a 36mm equivalent lens ideal on cameras with APS-C sensors. The SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive ensures fast, responsive focusing and quiet, very smooth operation. In keeping with traditional Carl Zeiss design, the all-metal lens barrel has been finished to a very high standard. The nine-blade circular iris diaphragm and f/2 maximum aperture combine to ensure smooth, natural bokeh.

The DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) lens is part of Sony’s ‘Easy Choice’ series of value-priced, compact and lightweight lenses. Weighing only 170 grams, it has a minimum focus of 23 cm and an internal Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) that drives the focussing group directly and ensures responsive and fluid autofocus operation. With a focal length equivalent to approximately 50mm on an APS-C sensor camera, this lens is ideal for snapshots and portraits. The fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is advantageous for hand-held shooting in low light.

The 85mm f/2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) is another ‘Easy Choice’ lens that covers a popular focal length for both ‘full frame’ and APS-C DSLRs. With the latter it has a focal length equivalent to 127.5mm in 35mm format. Ideal for portraiture with both camera types, it features a Sonnar-type optical design that focuses to 60 cm. The lens is sharp centre to corner and offers smooth defocusing thanks to its large f/2.8 maximum aperture and circular iris diaphragm.
