September 11, 2006: Sony has released details of a new Global Positioning System (GPS) unit that will enable photographers to embed location data in image files.
The new GPS-CS1 unit records detailed location information onto an internal memory. Users can apply the information recorded by the GPS unit to photos captured via the supplied ‘GPS Image Tracker’ software. This allows photographers to match the time data in the GPS log file with the time data hidden in photograph files and apply the matched positioning data. Users can view the history of a series of shots with the ‘Picture Motion Browser’ software that comes with all current Cyber-shot cameras and Handycam camcorders. Activating the ‘Map View’ function displays a mapped outline of the photographic journey (courtesy of Google Maps) complete with time, date and location details.
The GPS-CS1 unit weighs only 99 grams and provides up to 14 hours of location recording from a fully-charged battery. It can accumulate up to 360 hours of log files and, once it has located enough satellites, automatically records location data every 15 seconds. The GPS-CS1 unit is due for release this month and is expected to sell for $229. For additional product information and details of stockists, visit www.sony.com.au.
