Featuring a compact and lightweight design, the FE 24mm f/1.4 GM lens is only 92.4mm, with a maximum diameter of 75.4 mm and a weight of only 445 grams. It accepts 67 mm diameter filters and includes Sony’s specialist advanced optical technologies. The optical design comprises 10 groups with 13 elements including two XA (extreme aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements. The two XA elements suppress sagittal flare so that point light sources are accurately reproduced, making this lens ideal for astrophotography. Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating is applied to reduce flare and ghosting.
The new lens is designed for use with Sony’s α7 and α9 cameras where its new high power DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focusing system will provide approximately three times greater thrust than the previous DDSSM, enabling fast response, high positioning accuracy and quiet operation for both stills and movie shooting. Close focusing is supported to within 24 cm of subjects and each lens is individually tested and adjusted to achieve maximum image quality and bokeh.
The FE 24mm f/1.4 GM will begin shipping in Europe and North America in October 2018, with an MSRP of approximately US$1400. It has yet to appear on Sony’s Australian website.
