Sony’s new DSCP9 Cyber-shot digital still camera is due for release shortly at a suggested retail price of $1599. May 2002: Sony’s new DSCP9 Cyber-shot digital still camera is due for release shortly at a suggested retail price of $1599. Featuring a 4-megapixel CCD sensor and 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length range equivalent to 39-117mm in 35mm format and a maximum aperture of f2.8, the P9 weighs only 176.5 grams (without battery and card) and measures 114 x 51.5 x 35.8 mm. Key features include the ability to record MPEG movie clips at HQX or EX resolution, with the length of clip limited only by available storage. Movies are also recorded with sound. A Clipmotion mode is also provided for creating animations, along with a zoom-and-resize’ function that lets users crop and enlarge parts of captured images. There’s also a multi-burst’ mode for continuous shooting, with three selectable interval times: 1/25 sec, 1/12.5 sec and 1/6.3 sec. Sixteen continuous shots are recorded at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. These can be played back at 0.6 second intervals by the camera or viewed as a 16-shot thumbnail sheet on a PC. Three Scene Selection modes are provided, along with four effects selections and users can select from multi-point and center-weighted AF and multi-pattern and spot metering. Noise reduction is available for low light shooting and four sensitivity settings and five white balance settings are provided. The P9 comes with a 16 MB Memory Stick and InfoLithium battery and charger. Details are available at www.sony.com.au. Sony has invigorated its CD-Mavica line-up with two replacement models that offer improved features and up-to-date styling. The 2-megapixel MVCCD250 (SRP $1649) replaces the similarly-featured MVCCD200, while the MVCCD400 (SRP $2499), which replaces the MVCCD300 has a 4-megapixel sensor and fast Carl Zeiss lens. Both models are fitted with a 3x optical zoom lens and offer 6x digital zoom capabilities. They also feature multi-burst and MPEG movie clip capabilities plus a new Confirm Before Write’ function that allows users to select, delete or write images one by one. They also offer aperture and shutter priority AE modes plus full manual exposure control. Both models are supplied with 1 GB of blank media, comprising six CD-R disks and one CD-RW. The DSCP51 Cyber-shot is a 2-megapixel model with an SRP of $799 and 2x optical zoom lens with 6x digital zoom capability. It captures MPEG movie clips (without sound) and features multi-burst shooting. The DSCP71 Cyber-shot has similar features but a 3-megapixel sensor, 3x zoom lens and an SRP OF $999. Both models come with Sony’s new NiMH rechargeable batteries (see below) and a charger. Sony has also launched a new range of AA-size NiMH batteries for use in selected cameras (and other devices), along with a charger that delivers a one-hour super quick’ charge (to 80% capacity for two AA NiMH batteries), which carries an SRP of $79.95.
