October 31, 2011: Sony has released details of its new DEV-5 digital binoculars, which include the ability to record Full HD video with stereo sound.
Claimed as a ‘world first’, the DEV-5 binoculars provide up to 20x magnification, with digital zoom at magnification settings over 10x plus a built-in GPS receiver. They also feature electronic autofocus with focus tracking plus a dial control that allows fingertip adjustment of manual focus for focusing selectively on the subject. The electronic autofocus allows the DEV-5 to focus on subjects as close as 1cm when recording in 2D.
Paired Exmor R CMOS sensors and powerful BIONZ processors plus a matching pair of precision G lenses allows separate images for left and right eyes to be captured for 3D movie recording. The resulting 3D video footage can be played on a 3D BRAVIA TV, with a maximum magnification of 5.4 times in 3D mode. The minimum distance is 80 cm when recording in 3D.
The DEV-5 binoculars also feature Sony’s SteadyShot Active Mode optical stabilisation system. With a minimal ‘stealth’ design and ergonomic grip area that is coated with an elastomer material for firm handling and stable operation, they are comfortable to hold for extended periods. Top-mounted controls allow easy operation, even with gloved fingers, while dual buttons are provided to start recording instantly with either hand.
The supplied rechargeable battery pack (NP-FV70) supports up to 3 hours of 2D recording per charge. Also included are a USB adaptor, lens cover, finder cap, large eye cups, a carrying case and neck strap. Sony’s DEV-5 digital recording binoculars will be available in Australia from November 2011 for RRP $1999. For more information, visit www.sony.com.au.
