October 30, 2007: Sony will sponsor the inaugural World Photography Awards (WPA), an international showcase of the best images taken by professional and amateur photographers, which aims to unearth the images of the future while paying tribute to the visions of the past.
Both professional and amateur photographers will be invited to submit their work, from 9 October 2007 until the end of January, 2008. All entries will be judged by a prestigious academy of experts, consisting of more than 100 of the most respected photographers, critics, picture editors, gallery owners and other industry leaders. A list of current academy members can be found at www.worldphotographyawards.org. The winners will be announced at a black tie awards ceremony in Cannes at the Palais des Festivals on 24th April 2008. The awards and subsequent exhibition will become to photography what the Oscars are to the film industry.
Professional photographers will be invited to submit images in 11 categories: Abstract, Advertising, Architecture, Fashion, Music, Nature, Nude, Portraiture, Photojournalism, Science and Sport. Eight categories are open to amateur photographers: Abstract, Architecture, Fashion, Music, Nature, Portraiture, Science and Sport. All submissions must be made online via the website (www.worldphotographyawards.org). Closing date for submissions is 31 January, 2008.
