November 18, 2010: Sony Corporation has released details of a new type of interchangeable lens camcorder with a large format CMOS sensor.
Designed for professional use, this new ‘NXCAM’ HD camcorder will use the E-mount interchangeable lens system that is used in Sony’s NEX-5, 3 and Handycam NEX-VG10 camcorder. A very short flange back distance (the distance between lens mount surface and sensor surface) will enable certain A-mount lenses be mounted via a mount adaptor (LA-EA1) and third-party adaptors can be used with other manufacturers’ lenses.

The ‘NXCAM’ HD camcorder will be equipped with a Super-35mm equivalent sensor. This provides a similar frame size to the most widely used film stock size in the film industry and is perfectly designed for recording motion pictures. This new sensor will offer outstanding picture quality and sensitivity, and enables users to create rich ‘Bokeh’ effects that are ideal for artistic story-telling in movies.
The new HD camcorder will record in AVCHD, a widely supported format by many non-linear editing software vendors and the same format as HXR-NX5 ‘NXCAM’ camcorder.
There is also a plan to implement 1080p (60p / 30p / 24p2 or 50p / 25p) recording modes using MPEG4-AVC/H.264 compression. The new addition to Sony’s professional ‘NXCAM’ line is scheduled for release in the middle of 2011.
