Six we like: a taste of BIFB ’13

The 2013 Ballarat International Foto Biennale in Australia will run from  August 17 to September 15, and the organisers generously offered us a sneak peak of the final program. Here are six photographers who caught our eye.

With over 200 different events to choose from across the month-long festival, BIFB ’13 will lure lovers of photography to historic Ballarat with a tempting variety of exhibitions, workshops and artist talks. Choosing the ‘best’ photographers from such an event would be presumptuous, but we’re happy nevertheless to recommend half a dozen artists from the Core Exhibition Program whose work we found particularly interesting. If you’re fortunate enough to attend BIFB ’13 you won’t want to miss them. And if you can’t make the show, delve into their websites.

Sonia Macak

Sonia Macak was born in former Czechoslovakia in 1979 and in 2002 moved to Australia, leaving the Czech Republic. Sonia is a mother to three boys – an endless well of inspiration and the main subjects of her personal work. A self-taught photographer, she has recently started taking occasional courses at Gold Street Studios, specialising in wet plate and other alternative processes. Photography, Sonia says, helped keep her alive while suffering from chronic depression with borderline personality traits.

Sonia learned photography with a Nikon DSLR which she received as a gift from her husband in 2006. With no formal studies, Sonia creates from her heart, photographing her boys. Her pictures are influenced by her much loved collection of family images given to her by her grandmother.
Sonia’s works have featured in various exhibitions and publications since 2006, including the Collodian Quarterly and an all-women art exhibition at Light Space & Time Fine Art Gallery.
