June 12, 2007: SanDisk had added a 64-gigabyte (GB) solid state drive to its line-up of SSD products, offering increased capacity for notebook PCs and storage devices.

The announcement was made at Computex Taipei 2007 and doubles the top capacity of SanDisk’s 1.8-inch UATA 5000 and 2.5-inch SATA 5000 SSD products. The new SSD can be dropped in as a replacement for hard disk drives in most mainstream notebook computers and data storage devices that use notebook HDDs. Compared to a typical hard disk drive, SanDisk’s SSDs offer greater durability and reliability. They are six times less likely to fail than notebook HDDs when dropped or exposed to extreme temperatures and much faster to start. In notebook computers, data moves to and from an SSD more than 100 times faster than data moving to and from a hard disk. They are also more power efficient, providing expended battery life for “road warriors”.

The company plans to offer 64GB engineering samples in the third quarter of this year, with mass production planned to commence prior to the end of the year. More information about SanDisk SSD products is available online at www.sandisk.com/ssd.
