Samsung’s New Digimax L55W

October 12, 2005: The latest Samsung digicam, the Digimax L55W, combines a 5-megapixel sensor with a 4.8x optical zoom lens with a focal length equivalent to 28-135mm in 35mm format.
The new model also sports a 2.8-inch wide TMR LCD monitor that allows users to view their shots in either 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios, enhancing its functionality for recording shots for display on wide-screen TV sets. The high contrast-ratio TMR LCD display gives users a clearer and brighter display image plus a 160 degree wide viewing angle that makes it easy to share captured images with others. Other features include instant start-up and reduced shot-to-shot times plus continuous shooting at 2.5 frames/second.
The Samsung also offers enhanced movie capture facilities and can record more than an hour of MPEG-4 video at VGA resolution and 30 frames/second on a 256 MB memory card. Movie stabilisation, which works by detecting and correcting for lateral and vertical camera movements, is also provided to ensure steady shooting when the camera is hand-held. A ” continuous video” function allows users to pause and resume video recording as desired and merge those multiple movie clips into a single file at a later time. Still images can also be captured from video clips during playback.
Another novel feature is the ability to recharge the camera’s battery via the USB port on a laptop computer or PC, a “first’ on a compact digicam and a handy feature for travellers. The Macro function has been improved to allow focusing to 2 cm and the camera comes with 11 scene mode settings plus a wide range of special effects. A My Set Shot mode is provided for snapshooting and one-touch playback is available for on-the-spot shot reviews. The camera comes with 32 MB of built-in memory plus an SD card slot.
