March 4, 2009: Samsung has used the PMA 2009 Trade Show as a global launching pad for its new NX Series of hybrid digital cameras, which promise the performance and image quality of a DSLR plus the portability and convenience of a digicam.
A mock-up of the first model in the series (shown below) was exhibited on Samsung’s stand at PMA. It is scheduled for release in the second half of this year.

Although no specifications have yet been released for the new camera, according to Samsung’s media release, NX Series models will be equipped with APS-C-sized sensors and feature electronic viewfinders instead of the reflex mirror and viewfinder systems found in DSLRs. This is similar to the concept behind the Micro Four Thirds System and reduces the distance between the lens and image sensor (flange back distance) by approximately 60% compared to traditional DSLRs. The new cameras will include Live View functionality and, probably, video recording.
