September 22, 2006: Samsung Techwin has released details of its new 10.2 mega-pixel GX-10 digital SLR, the first DSLR from the company to be targeted at “the discerning enthusiast photographer”.
On paper, the new camera’s specifications appear identical to the recently-announced Pentax K10D, which is no surprise, since Pentax and Samsung agreed to collaborate on DSLR development last year. The GX-10 features a similar CCD-shift Optical Picture Stabilization (OPS) technology to the K10D, along with a dust and water resistant body. It also boasts continuous shooting at three frames/second (to memory capacity for JPEGs or up to 9 raw files), a TTL phase-matching 11-point wide AF system and TTL open-aperture 16 segment metering system. Sensitivity adjustments up to ISO 1600 are supported. The 2.5-inch TFT LCD is brightness-adjustable and offers a wide angle of view and 210,000 pixel resolution and the bright PentaPrism viewfinder has a field of view of 95% and offers 0.95x magnification.

Manual lens information can be input to allow manual lenses designed for film cameras to be used with the GX-10, thereby benefiting from its anti-shake system. A one-touch RAW button makes it easy to swap between raw and JPEG formats when shooting. Raw files can be checked on the LCD and then directly converted to JPEG format via the built-in converter. A My Set Dial option lets users personalise certain dial settings for quick access to the most frequently used functions.

Samsung also announced the impending release of five new lenses: a “fish eye” 10-17mm F3.5-F4.5 ED lens, an ultra wide 12-24mm F4 ED AL zoom lens, a 16-45mm F4 ED AL wide zoom lens, a 35mm F2 AL fixed focus lens and a Macro 100mm F2.8 lens.
The new lenses will also be compatible with the GX-1S and GX-1L DSLRs launched by Samsung earlier in the year. More lenses are scheduled for release in 2007. The GX-10 and lenses are expected to be released worldwide from November, with prices being announced at that time.
