January 27, 2011: Ricoh’s new CX5 digital compact camera, which was announced overnight, is scheduled for local release from late February at an RRP of $499.
Featuring a new, faster hybrid AF system and super-resolution technology, the CX5 sports a 6.16 x 4.62 mm, back-illuminated 10 megapixel CMOS sensor and 920,000-dot, 3.0-inch high resolution LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating. The 4.9-52.5mm zoom lens covers focal lengths from 28-300mm (35mm equivalent) and the camera supports Step Zooming across eight steps for precise focal length adjustment. The optical zoom range of 10.7x is supported by a super-resolution zoom function that doubles the effective focal length setting without compromising picture quality. Up to 4.8x digital zoom is also provided.

The new hybrid AF system claims to enable the CX5 to AF speeds of just 0.2 seconds at all focal length settings. It can be combined with the subject-tracking AF system (introduced by the CX4) for shooting fast-moving subjects and achieving high success rates. The Super-resolution zoom can be combined with the camera’s 4.8x digital zoom to extend the telephoto range to 2880mm equivalent for close-ups of flowers and insects as well as long range shots distant subjects.
New food, fireworks and golf swing scene modes have been added to the scene presets portfolio. The golf swing mode records up to 13 continuous motion shots and displays horizontal and vertical gridlines during shooting and playback so users can review and analyse a golf swing. The CX5 is also Ricoh’s first Eye-Fi compatible camera. Although Eye-Fi-enabled SD cards are not sold in Australia at present, this function can enable users to upload images wirelessly to a computer or the Eye-Fi cloud in areas where Eye-Fi is supported.
