A new report released in December reveals sales of digital still cameras have grown by almost 2000 percent between 2000 and 2003.

The first Canon Consumer Digital Lifestyle Index (CDLI), containing Australian research conducted by GfK Marketing Services (GfK), showed Australians to be increasingly interested in purchasing items in nine key areas of consumer electronics: Digital Camcorders, Digital Still Cameras (DSC), Inkjet Printers, Digital CTV, Consoles, DVD Players, VCRs, Multifunction Devices (MFDs) and Scanners.

Digital still cameras have been spectacularly successful, with sales increasing by 1940 percent between the first quarter of 2000 and the second quarter of 2003. That growth is continuing, making this product category the fastest growing digital lifestyle product in Australia, based on consumer sales. Digital camcorder sales grew by 1041 percent in the same period. Fuelling this growth is the enormous increase in digital photo printing in the home, which has driven DSC growth hand in hand with photo quality inkjet printer sales. Competitive pricing and an increasingly wide range of products to choose from are also influencing the growth of digital take-up in Australia.
