February 14, 2008: The National Library of Australia is inviting all image-makers to ‘mash-up’ selected public domain historical images into new artworks that ‘re-picture’ Australia.
Working through Picture Australia, which offers some of the nation’s best pictorial collections online, the initiative will involve picture curators from libraries, archives, galleries and museums around the country providing high-resolution images from their collections for the project. Image-makers are encourages to include their own illustrations and photographs and create new montages from selections of images. These new creations will then play a role in the national record – or may be acquired by a collecting institution.
After image-makers load their ‘mash-ups’ to the popular photo-sharing website, Flickr, they will then be transferred back to Picture Australia to ‘Re-Picture’ Australia. Selected works from the Re-Picture Australia project may also be included in Picture Australia’s contribution to the Vivid National Photography Festival, which runs from July 11 to October 12 in Canberra, including a multimedia display at the National Library of Australia. Information on how to access the public domain images and add and describe your own work, can be accessed from www.pictureaustralia.org.
