Designed for cameras with APS-C sensors, the new Laowa ‘Argus’ 33mm f/0.95 CF APO is offered in Fujifilm X, Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon R mounts. The ‘Argus’ name comes from Greek mythology and belonged to a vigilant guardian with a hundred eyes and ‘all-seeing’ sight, as shown through the ultra-bright f/0.95 maximum aperture of the lenses in the series. The new 35mm lens offers photographers and videographers a classic focal length for everyday shooting plus versatility to shoot in difficult lighting. With a 35 cm minimum focus, the fast f/0.95 allows users to shoot with a shallow depth of field and a smooth, atmospheric bokeh.
The optical design consists of 14 elements in nine groups and includes one Extra-low Dispersion Glass, one Aspherical Lens and three Ultra High Refraction Glass to suppress both lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration. Nine diaphragm blades produce a circular aperture and the lens claims exceptional image sharpness across the frame. Focus breathing has been minimised for narrative filming and general videography, while a long focus throw (300 degrees) provides precise focus control. Internal focusing enables use of add-on accessories and the stepless aperture ring allows users to adjust and control the exposure smoothly.
The Laowa Argus 33mm f/0.95 CF APO is 83 mm long and weighs 590 grams. It accepts 62 mm filters. The new lens is currently available to purchase via Venus Optics official website and will be released during May to authorised resellers. Pricing varies in different countries but the US price (ex-VAT) is $499. Click here for more information.
