The new lens, which is scheduled to go on sale on 22 August, is remarkably compact for its type with a length of only 126 mm and weight of 610 grams. This makes it ideal for travellers and everyday photographers and versatile enough to use for landscapes, snapshots, portraits and sports photography. The optical design of the lens consists of 20 elements in 13 groups, including one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element and an LD (Low Dispersion) element to address common aberrations like chromatic aberration. Proprietary BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating suppresses ghosting and flare and ensures best-in-class image quality for an all-in-one zoom lens in its category. Autofocusing is driven by a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) that includes Tamron’s premium linear motor focus mechanism that is extremely fast, accurate and near-silent. Built-in VC stabilisation effectively suppresses camera shake.
The new lens maintains a number of key Tamron features, including compatibility with 67 mm diameter filters, a Focus Set Button for assigning camera functions and integration with Tamron Lens Utility software, which supports function customisation and enables the lens firmware to be updated via USB-C from a computer or smartphone. It also includes moisture-resistant sealing and a fluorine coating on the front element to repel liquids and grease. The new lens is also compatible with Sony on-board camera functions, such as Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF. It is supplied with a petal-shaped lens hood plus front and rear caps and has an RRP of AU$1649.
