Leading the list of improvements in the new G2 lens is the incorporation of Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) stabilisation mechanism, which effectively suppresses camera shake when shooting and panning to capture moving objects and during close-focusing. It also enables handheld shooting in dimly-lit areas and, at focal lengths up to 100mm, AI technology

provides added vibration compensation for videography. The revamped optical design contains 20 elements in 15 groups and includes one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), one hybrid aspherical lens element, three LD (Low Dispersion) and two GM (Glass Molded aspherical) lens elements to address common aberrations. BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and flare, while the constant fast f/2.8 maximum aperture ensures smooth and attractive bokeh.

Autofocusing is driven by a similar VXD linear motor to that used in the original lens. But its tracking performance for following moving subjects has been boosted and the linear motor also suppresses vibrations and noise during AF, making this lens ideal for use in situations where quietness is required. The minimum focusing distance has been reduced from 85 cm in the original lens to just 30 cm in the new model, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.6. The new lens is only 156.5 mm long with a maximum diameter of 83 mm. It accepts the same 67 mm filters as most other Tamron lenses and boasts moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element to allow easy cleaning.
