On 19 September, 2024, Tamron will release its popular 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens, which is currently only available in Sony E mount, for Nikon Z mount cameras.

Offering an 8x zoom ratio that begins at the ‘standard’ 50mm focal length and extends to 400mm ultra telephoto coverage, this lens is both smaller and lighter than conventional 100-400mm zoom lenses yet offers a wider angle of view at its shortest focal length. Only 185.8 mm long and weighing just 1,180 grams, it is also remarkably compact for its type. We found the E-mount version of this lens, which was reviewed in August 2022, to be a generally good performer. The VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism was fast and quiet and the built-in VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism, which is enhanced with AI algorithms to improve performance characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or les, performed almost as well. The lens was also capable of half life-size (1:2) macro focus at the 50mm position, where its minimum focus distance is 25 cm.

The overall design and optical construction have changed little since the E-mount lens and the new Z-mount version comes with the same waterproofed USB Type C socket for connecting the lens to a computer. Via this interface and the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility, users can install firmware updates and customise key lens controls. An optional Arca-Swiss compatible accessory tripod mount is available for convenience when using a tripod. The RRP for the new lens is AU$2499. Click here for more information.
