Due to go on sale on 10 June is the 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD (Model A057) ultra-telephoto zoom lens for Sony’s full-frame E-mount cameras. The company’s first telephoto zoom lens for mirrorless cameras to reach the 500mm focal length is compact enough for comfortable handheld shooting and comes with a VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), a linear motor focus mechanism, coupled with the proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism for high-level image stabilisation. At the 150mm end, the lens offers an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.6m at 150mm or 1.8 metres at 500mm for powerful and dramatic close-ups.

The new lens is 209.6 mm long with a maximum diameter of 93 mm and weight of 1,725 grams. Its optical design consists of 25 elements in 16 groups and includes one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), five LD (Low Dispersion) and two Hybrid Aspherical lens elements to control common aberrations. The VXD autofocusing motor delivers responsive and quiet performance throughout the zoom range. Focus tracking has been vastly improved to facilitate capturing fast-moving subjects, for example sporting events, birds and aviation photography. The VC mode selection switch provides three settings (Mode 1: Standard, Mode 2: Exclusively for Panning, and Mode 3: Framing Priority) for users to match to shooting conditions.

The new lens also features BBAR-G2 Coating to suppress ghosting and flare, moisture-resistant construction plus a fluorine coating on exposed elements to provide extra protection, an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod mount with strap attachment holes included and a lens hood with flexible, protective front portion. Its RRP at launch will be AU$2099.  Click here for more information.

Its optical design features 12 elements in 10 groups and includes two precisely located GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) elements that deliver edge-to-edge sharpness plus one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and two LD (Low Dispersion) elements for correcting common optical aberrations. BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating that suppresses ghosting and flare.

With a MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 0.15m at the 11mm focal length, it offers a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 for wide-angle macro photography with expressive bokeh. A unified 67mm filter size allows reciprocal sharing of filters such as PL and ND, and lens caps with other E-mount lenses.
