Sony has used the first day of the CP+ show to announce the new FE 16mm f1/.8 and FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8G lenses for its full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The FE 16mm f1/.8 (SEL16F18G) is a premium G-series wide-angle lens with an optical design that includes two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements, one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements to suppress chromatic aberration. It also boasts an optimised coating to minimise flare and ghosting. Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensure fast, precise AF and tracking. A control algorithm developed specifically for the XD linear motors achieves enhanced response with minimal delay and vibration plus quiet, low-vibration operation. Close-up performance is excellent with smooth bokeh, thanks to its large f/1.8 maximum aperture, 11-bladed circular aperture and minimum focusing distance of 15 cm, which delivers a maximum magnification of 0.25x when using AF. This lens is also compact, measuring 73.8 x 75 mm and weighing just 304 grams. The FE 16mm f/1.8 G lens will be available in Australia from April 2025 at an SRP of AU$1899.  Click here for more information.

The second lens to be announced is the Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8G OSS lens (SEL400800G), a super-telephoto lens with high resolution performance across the entire zoom range. Its optical design consists of 27 elements in 19 groups and contains six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively control chromatic aberration. Flare and ghosting in backlit conditions are also thoroughly suppressed. An 11-blade circular aperture helps to create beautiful ball bokeh amid exceptionally smooth, creamy background bokeh when shooting with a narrow depth of field. OSS image stabilisation includes Active and Panning modes, while two precision linear motors drive the lens’s focus group for fast, accurate focusing. Tracking easily keeps up with the 120 fps maximum burst speed of the α9 III, and continues uninterrupted even while zooming. A focus range switch (FULL/10m-NEAR/∞-8m) can also be used to optimise control for different subject distances. Focus breathing is suppressed for refined movie quality. The FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS will be available in Australia from March 2025 at an SRP of AU$4399. Click here for details.
