Some details have been released for Sony’s up-coming FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G lens, which is claimed as the world’s lightest full-frame wide-angle power-zoom lens.

Designed for shooting both stills and video, the new lens features an easy-to-use power zoom in a compact form factor that enables it to be used on the company’s cropped-sensor cameras as well as its full frame models. Overall barrel length remains constant while focusing and zooming, making it equally suitable for vlogging and movie production through to remote capture and landscape photography.

Full specifications have not been released but a press release states the optical design includes one Super ED (extra-low dispersion), and one ED glass element to control chromatic aberration, while one ED aspherical element controls both chromatic and spherical aberration. Optimised coatings effectively suppress flare and ghosting. The minimum focus is 28 cm at 16mm and 24 mm at 35mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.23x.

Autofocusing is driven by two XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear motors, which can maintain accurate focus while shooting stills continuously at up to 30 fps and up to 120 fps in movie mode. It features the latest lens technology to reduce focus breathing as well as focus and axial shift when zooming.

The new lens is dust- and moisture-resistant and weighs just 353 grams. It measures 80.5 x 88.1 mm and accepts 72 mm diameter filters. Shipping is expected to commence in June 2022. Local pricing is not yet available but the estimated US price is around US$1200. Click here for local information.

UPDATE 24 March: Sony Australia has revealed the new lens will be available in Australia from early May 2022 at an SRP of AU$1999.00.
