Designed for Micro Four Thirds System cameras, this fast and compact prime lens was pre-announced in the latest lens roadmap, which was released in September. The new lens covers a field of view equivalent to 40mm in 35mm format and is suitable for photographing landscapes, portraits and everyday snapshots. Its optical design (shown below) uses an 11-element, 10-group lens configuration that includes one Super ED, three ED, two Super HR and two aspherical lens elements, arranged to provide sharpness from the centre to the periphery of the frame while minimising common aberrations. ZERO coating has been applied and the design of the lens barrel provides optimal suppression of internal reflections to suppress ghosting and flare.

The new lens also features the ‘feathered bokeh’ technology, which was developed for the M.Zuiko PRO F1.2 series of lenses.  It works by slowly introducing blur moving from the in-focus area to the out-of-focus region, using an aberration measurement instrument to measure bokeh at the aberration level and deliver optimal control over spherical aberration. Weather-sealed throughout, the 20mm f/1.4 PRO lens offers IPX1 equivalent splashproof performance and is dustproof and freeze resistant to -10°C. A fluorine coating on the front element resists water and grease, making it easy to keep clean.

Compact and lightweight at 247 grams with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4, the new lens has a minimum focusing distance of 25 cm and a maximum image magnification of 0.22x. When paired with the OM-D E-M5 Mark III camera, the overall weight of camera and lens will be approximately 661 grams, making for a  very lightweight kit. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 20mm f/1.4 PRO lens will be available from early December 2021 at an RRP of $1199 AUD / $1299 NZD.
