Leica’s latest L-mount lens, the Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400mm f/5-6.3, which is available now, will be a welcome extension to the SL-System lens portfolio.

Designed for Leica’s SL-System and L-mount cameras from other manufacturers, the new lens is relatively compact for its zoom range due to its modest f/5-6.3 maximum aperture range and extending inner barrel. Just 198 mm in length, with a diameter of 82 mm and overall weight of just under 1.5 kg, it is compact enough to fit easily into a standard camera bag. Supplied with the lens is a detachable, Arca-Swiss compatible tripod base that can be inserted directly into a suitable coupling system without a quick-release plate. A lockable tripod clamp also allows the lens to be fixed securely at any angle.

The optical design of the new lens has 22 elements arranged in 16 groups and the lens features built-in optical image stabilisation and weather-sealed construction with AquaDura coating to protect against dust and moisture. The new lens is being released with a new optional Leica Extender L 1.4x tele-converter, which extends its effective focal length to a range equivalent to140-560mm.
