Canon has released details of its new PowerShot V10 vlogging camera. which marks the start of a completely new series of compact PowerShots targeted at content creators.

The PowerShot V10 is Canon’s first compact camera to be designed specifically for vlogging. Weighing only 211 grams, it has a sturdy vertical body that measures 63.4 x 90.0 x 34.3 mm and will be offered in all-black and black and silver colours. Small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, its design allows it to be operated almost completely single-handedly, with the large record button on the front panel providing straightforward control of video and stills recording. Features include a built-in folding stand and a tilt-up, 2-inch LCD touchscreen with 460,000-dot resolution, which can be used for direct-to-camera presentations. An auto display inversion setting lets users set the screen display to match the camera’s orientation, making it easy to record vertical videos.

The camera’s 12.8 x 9.6 mm CMOS sensor has an effective resolution of 15.2 megapixels for stills or 13.1 megapixels for video. Image data is processed by a DIGIC X processor. Fourteen colour filter effects are provided along with a Smooth Skin mode, auto ND filter and Face-tracking AF. Two large, low-noise microphones capture high-quality stereo audio. The 6.6mm lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 and a focal length equivalent to 18mm for stills or 19mm in video mode. Three digital zoom settings are provided, giving 1.5x, 2x and 3x magnification options for shooting close-ups. The lens design contains eight elements in seven groups and includes three aspherical and one UD elements. The camera’s shutter is fully electronic and offers a shutter speed range of one to 1/2000 second for stills or 1/25 to 1/4000 second for movies. The ISO sensitivity range is 125 to 12800 for stills, with a top ISO setting of 3200 for 4K movies or 6400 for FHD video recordings.

The PowerShot V10 comes with a single media slot for UHS-1 compatible microSD cards. Stills images are recorded as JPEGs only, while video is recorded in the MP4 format with two rates of IPB compression and a top resolution of 4K/30p. Full HD video can be recorded at 60p, 30p and 23.98p frame rates. The Movie Digital IS mode enables steady handheld videography. Overheating control is provided for movie recording.
Communications interfaces are provided for Wi-Fi (wireless LAN) and low-energy Bluetooth. The camera also sports a USB-C port that can be used for connecting the device to a computer for file transfers and to allow the V10 to be used as a webcam. It is fully compatible with Canon Camera Connect app and includes built-in image.canon integration for temporary cloud storage, which can be used to directly transfer images to social media platforms. Dedicated menu options are provided for live streaming on YouTube and Facebook An HDMI Type D port is also included, along with an external microphone terminal with 3-channel noise cancellation.

The built-in battery has a rated capacity of approximately 290 shots/charge or two hours of video recording or vlogging. It is charged via a compatible USB-C cable (but no charger is supplied). The PowerShot V10 is sold in plastic-free packaging. It will be available in Australia in June 2023 at an RRP of AU$699.
