Adobe has just released the December 2024 update to its popular Camera Raw raw file converter, adding a new tool for easily removing distractions like large-scale reflections in photos.

Accessing the new Distraction Removal tool for removing unwanted reflections in the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw.

This feature is currently available as a Technology Preview and selected by opening Camera Raw Preferences > Technology Previews and selecting New AI Features and Settings Panel. (You may need to restart the host application to access the AI-powered features in Camera Raw.) Adobe provides the following instructions and tips for using the new feature:

  • In Adobe Camera Raw, select and open a raw photo with reflections.
  • In the Remove panel under Distraction Removal, select the Reflections checkbox.
  • Camera Raw will automatically detect and remove the window reflections in the photo.
  • You can adjust the Reflections slider (set to 100 once the reflections are detected and removed).
  • Set the slider to 100 to view the image after removing the reflection.
  • Set the slider to 0 to view the original image with reflection.
  • Set the slider to -100 to view only the reflection in the glass without the original subject.
  • Sometimes, the +100 setting might show the reflection. If so, move the slider to -100 to view the image after removing the reflection.

For the best results, it is recommended that you adjust the reflections first and then edit the image using other features and tools. Currently, the Reflections removal tool does not support non-raw file formats like JPEG and HEIC.
