January 25, 2007: One of the interesting products released at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, which almost slid under our radar is the Polaroid ClickFree storage device.
Developed jointly by Polaroid and Storage Appliance Corporation, it contains a portable 40GB hard disk drive and is designed purely for backing-up image files. The device appears to be genuinely easy to use. You don’t need to install any software, run through any set-up process or even decide when to back-up. The device doesn’t even have a power button! Its only connectors are a Mini USB socket and an input for a power adapter (supplied) on the top panel. If your computer can supply enough power via the USB cable, additional power isn’t required.
Once the device is connected to your Windows computer, it will automatically search your system for image files and back them up. And it will only back up files that haven’t already been copied as well as those that have been modified on your computer. More than 60 different image file formats are supported. For users with particular back-up requirements, there’s an options menu that lets you decide what not to back up or select specific images for printing, emailing or copying to optical disks.
We don’t know whether this device will be released in Australia. Product launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2007 and US pricing is estimated to be $120.
