December 10, 2008: Polaroid will cease production of its instant film range at the end of this month, according to a report from CNN.
The company is citing “Market conditions” as the reason for the termination. Sales of all film types have declined steadily since the introduction of digital still cameras and the instant replay of captured images has made Polaroid film largely irrelevant. The report claims prices on remaining stocks have begun to rise as Polaroid enthusiasts strive to collect as much as possible. According to Polaroid’s website, the last specialty film products will run out in May 2009, and the last pictures on the regular 600 film will be taken some time in August next year.
