Foveon has released details of a new Polaroid-branded point-and-shoot digicam that will be fitted with Foveon’s 1/1.8-inch type (9.04mm) FO18-50-F19 CMOS direct image sensor.

Scheduled for release around mid-year, the Polaroid x530 will support Foveon’s X3F RAW file image capture and allow video clips to be recorded at VGA resolution with frame rates of at least 24 fps. It will ship with Foveon’s recently introduce X3 Fill Light software and be the first X3 based digital camera to capture in-camera JPEG format images. The ‘4.5-megapixel’ X3 sensor has an effective imaging area of 7.1 x 5.3mm and consists of three layers (R, G and B), each with 1420 x 1060 ‘effective pixels’. Pixel pitch is 5.0 µm. The sensor features Variable Pixel Size technology, which allows pixels to be grouped together on-chip to simulate the effect of larger photosites.

The camera is made by the Hong Kong-based World Wide License Ltd, which has also announced several other digital cameras bearing the Polaroid brand but not using Foveon’s sensor. These include the 3-megapixel 3x zoom PDC 3030, 5-megapixel 3x zoom PDC 5350, 4-megapixel 3x zoom PDC 4370 and 2-megapixel Polaroid MISS self-portrait camera, which has a swing-out monitor For details go to www.polaroid-digital.com.
