July 11, 2007: The Art Gallery of New South Wales has published a new handbook reproducing 400 images from the 4,000 photographs in the gallery’s collection, covering major trends in art photography.
Beginning with images from the Harold Cazneaux photographs became the beginning of the Gallery’s photography collection, The Photography Collection Handbook also covers surrealism, international modernism, fashion and celebrity and international photo-documentary, and provides an overview of the collection which is not possible through exhibition alone. The unfolding, in the early 20th century, of the arguments for photography as art and not only a straightforward record of people, place and events represents a large part of the Handbook.
The Photography Collection Handbook is priced at $45 and available from the Gallery’s bookshop. For more information, phone (02) 9225 1744 or visit www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au.
