Sony has announced the winners of the 2024 Sony Alpha Awards and the Catchlight Film Festival, which recognise Australian and New Zealand photographers who use Sony Alpha cameras and lenses.

$54,000 worth of Sony camera gear has been awarded at the 2024 Alpha Awards – including $4,000 of Sony digital imaging gear per category with the Grand Prize Winner, Ben Sowry taking away $10,000 worth of Sony camera gear. The winners were announced on Friday 27 September 2024 to kick off the inaugural Scene Tradeshow event held in Sydney at the White Bay Power Station in Rozelle. Taking place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, this event showcases the latest Sony cameras, lenses and accessories and includes a printed artist gallery of all finalists in the 2024 Alpha Awards, and a screening of the shortlisted films for Sony’s short film competition, Catchlight Film Festival.

Editorial: Sim Chong with Noodle Making
Landscape: Mike Hobbert with Lake George NSW
Nature: Geoffrey Hui with A Beakful of Fish
Portrait: Rachel Jordan with Transforming
Seascape: Ji Deng with Offshore Wind Farm at Sunrise
Sport: Blake Pickup with Symmetry
Wedding: Ben Sowry with To honour you
Youth: Jarvis Smallman with Flow State.

Winners of the 2024 Catchlight Film Festival have also been announced, with Nick & Nathan Lacey taking out the Fiction prize for Die Bully Die, Jones Riley Eli winning the Non-Fiction prize with DAD, Cameron Zayec winning the Music Video prize with Queen of Sin and Ormsby Taniora named as the Student Fiction Winner for The Great South. Japan – Lost by Elliott Sauvage has won the Cinematic Social prize and Special Laurels were awarded to Micaela Osfield, Matt Deavin, Nick Sullivan, Riti Ramanujachari, Maharaj Krish and Arango Guerrero Mateo.
