Sydney photographer, Les Irwig has taken out the Smartphone Weather Photographer of the Year prize with a shot of a surfer contemplating the heavy clouds of an impending storm.

According to the organisers, the Royal Meteorological Society and sponsor Standard Chartered, both based in the UK, this year’s competition saw an increase in entries raising awareness of the impact of climate change on our weather patterns around the world, and the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and forest fires.
