Established as a biennial prize to commemorate the legacy of David Roche AM (1930-2013), who ran the famous Fermoy Kennels in North Adelaide, the competition celebrates Australian dogs. David Roche holds the record for having won more Best in Shows at Royal Shows than any other Australian. An All Breeds dog judge from the 1950s onward, David was in demand internationally including appointments to Crufts in England and Morris & Essex in the United States. David’s archive includes photographic portraits of many of his champion dogs and now David Roche Gallery has created a prize opportunity to celebrate the many ways in which dogs continue to play a central role in our lives.
Open to Australian citizens or a resident of Australia (here until the end of 2025), entrants to the competition can submit up to four works across the categories of Dog portrait, Dogs and companions, Dogs in action and Puppies. All photographs must be the photographer’s original artwork taken in Australia after 19 May 2023. Co-judges for Best in Show 2025 are Director of David Roche Gallery Robert Reason, and internationally renowned animal photographer and respected judge Alex Cearns OAM. First prize in the competition if $5000, with Young Photographer (12-18 years old) award winner receiving $500 and the People’s Choice Award also $500. Click here for more information.
