Head On Landscape Award 2021 Winner by Aletheia Casey.
‘This work is a very personal reaction to the Australian fires of 2019/2020 which destroyed an estimated 18.6 million hectares of land, and almost destroyed my family home. As I live in London and I was unable to travel home, I took existing prints from my last trip home to Australia and painted them with inks and oils, in an attempt to express my devastation at what my country has experienced and to reflect on the loss of land and life. The interference and distortion of my brushstrokes on the prints are a mirror of human intervention in nature, my own hand attempting to control the uncontrollable.’
