Robert Fielding has been announced as the winner of the 2024 Bowness Photography Prize, for ‘Sacred earth/Manta Miil miilpa’, a collage of images on photosensitive emulsion applied to paper.

Classified as a ‘deliberate work of protest’ that ‘communicates the artist’s intention to practice truth-telling through his image-making’ the work combines old and new technologies. According to the artist, ‘One must look back to move forward, always honouring our land and culture.’ Fielding receives a cash prize of $30,000 and their work will be acquired into MAPh’s collection.
Honourable Mentions were awarded to Kirsten Lyttle for her work ‘Kete whiri awa‘, Patrick Pound for his work ‘The waste land‘ and Axel Garay for his work ‘Slow way (unfinished business)‘. The artist selected for the Wai Tang Commissioning Award will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to exhibit a body of work throughout next year’s Bowness Photography Prize season. The Camera House People’s Choice winner will be awarded a prize pool worth $5000: voting will commence from the exhibition’s opening night.
