Grand Winner in this year’s competition was Perth photographer, James Simmons, who took out the top prize in the Black & White Category as well as the highest scoring image of all entries with the above image. The photograph was taken after the wedding ceremony in an architectural location with rectangular columns breaking up the space. “This shot was taken on the corner of a column’, Simmons explained, “and was initially a portrait of Lisa standing against the dark side to really show off her stunningly-detailed dress and backlight her veil. Her husband James was standing pretty close, giving her something to look at and as I shot and reframed, James’ silhouette started to creep in. The Ying Yang symbol instantly came to mind and later as I refined the image in PS the King & Queen chess board design was also an influence that worked well visually.”
Victorian photographer, Eric Ronald took out the top award for a wedding album, while Queenslander, Keegan Cronin won the prize for single image capture. New Zealander, Coralee Johnstone won the first prize for the bridal party photograph. The winning images can be viewed at the International Wedding Photographer of the Year website.
