Entries will open for this year’s BirdLife Australia Photo Awards on Friday, 27 May.

Sponsored by Nikon Australia and Lake Cowal Foundation, this year’s competition focuses on the special theme of Australasian Robins. It includes separate categories for Backyard Birds, Birds in Flight, Bird Portrait, Bird Behaviour, Landscapes and Habitat, Human Impact, a Youth category and a Portfolio category. Each category winner will receive an AU$1,000 cash prize, with a $5,000 cash going to the portfolio winner courtesy of principal sponsor, Nikon Australia. There is also a special Black and White photography prize which entrants can opt into during entry. The special prize for this award is an original illustration by the late, great Australian ornithologist, wildlife artist and photographer Peter Slater, kindly donated by his son, Raoul Slater.
Entries lodged before June 27th, 2022 you will be eligible for an early bird discount! Entries close on August 1st, 2022. The winning images, including the portfolio, will be featured in an upcoming issue of Australian BirdLife magazine. As in previous years, The Guardian’s online People’s Choice Awards will be running, featuring images from our 2021 competition.
The 2022 judging panel features an array of top international photographers including: Michael Snedic, Gail Bisson, Raoul Slater, Lia Bocchiaro, Georgina Steytler, Charles Davis and Chris Purnell.
