September 22, 2006: Pentax will exhibit three interchangeable digital SLR camera lenses and a medium-format digital SLR camera, all currently under development, at Photokina 2006, which opens next week.
Full specifications of the new products have not been released but the new lenses will include a wide-angle zoom lens (tentatively named the smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8ED AL[IF]), a telephoto zoom (tentatively named the smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8ED [IF]) and a super-telephoto zoom lens (tentatively named the smc PENTAX-DA* 60-250mm F4ED [IF]). All three lenses are designed for exclusive use with Pentax K- and *istD-series digital SLR cameras and feature the KAF2 mount, which has additional electrical contacts to drive a built-in supersonic motor used in autofocusing operation.. They are being developed as the top-of-the-line star ( * ) lens to deliver exceptional performance and optimal image quality and are obviously targeted at purchasers of the recently-announced 10-megapixel K10D DSLR. All three lenses are scheduled for release in March 2007.
Also on show will be a new interchangeable-lens medium-format DSLR camera, which has been tentatively named the Pentax 645 Digital and sports the Pentax 645AF mount, offering compatibility with existing smc Pentax 645-series lenses. The new model boasts a resolution of 18 effective megapixels and Pentax has expressed plans to continuously upgrade this camera “by incorporating newly developed image sensors, with its final effective megapixels expected to reach a 30-megapixel level”. Release dates are not provided for this camera.
